What Is Dermal Filler?
Most people come to us for filler because something in the mirror has changed. Maybe your lips have thinned, or you’ve noticed new shadows under your eyes, deeper smile lines, or a face that looks flatter and more tired than you feel.
Here’s what’s happening underneath. As we age, the bones of the face slowly lose density, and the cheekbones, chin and jaw that hold up our skin and fat lose some of their structure. Weight loss speeds this up, because the fat that sat on top of that framework goes too. What’s left can read as gaunt or hollow.
Dermal filler lets us rebuild both layers. We place some product deep, right on the bone, to restore structure, and some more superficially to replace lost fat and support the skin. Your face still moves naturally, but with the structure and shadows of a more rested, youthful face.

Lip Filler in Peoria
Lip filler can add volume, shape and definition, or simply restore what’s thinned over time. We use soft, flexible hyaluronic acid fillers from the Juvéderm® family for lips, because the mouth moves constantly and the product needs to move with it.
We work low and slow. Many clients start with a half syringe, and half syringes are available for lip enhancement only. It’s always easier to add a little more at your follow-up than to take it away.

Because hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved, we start most new clients with Juvéderm®. We reserve Radiesse® for areas and clients where we’re confident in the plan or more structural support is needed.

It starts with a consultation
Filler is a step up from Botox® in complexity, so we’re careful about who we treat and when. Every filler client starts with a full-face consultation with Deborah Daniels, our nurse practitioner and medical director. In person is ideal, and a face-to-face video consult works if your schedule is tight.
Same-day filler after your consult is possible only if you’ve already reviewed and followed the guidelines below, so plan ahead.
What we’ll ask you, and why
When you book, you’ll get a link to our injectable intake form. Along with your medical history and medications, we’ll ask about your goals and your concerns. Then a quick screening, because honest answers keep you safe:
Pregnant or breastfeeding?
Filler isn’t recommended, so we’ll wait.
Moderate or severe allergies, or a history of anaphylaxis?
You may not be a good candidate, especially for the medial cheek or under-eye area. We’ll also ask about reactions to lidocaine, tetracaine, benzocaine, hyaluronic acid, CaHA or the bacteria used in making filler.
Been sick lately?
After a sinus, urinary tract, flu or other infection, wait until you’re fully recovered.
History of cold sores (oral herpes)?
You’ll need an antiviral before filler, especially around the mouth, so tell us ahead of time.
Autoimmune disease like lupus or rheumatoid arthritis?
Filler generally isn’t a great fit, and we’ll talk it through carefully.
Acne, rosacea or dermatitis flaring?
We’ll want your skin calm before we inject through it.
Tend to pass out with needles?
Tell us before your appointment. We’ll position you, pace the treatment and make sure you’ve eaten.
Dental work, vaccines or other procedures within a month before or after treatment?
These can raise the risk of infection or inflammatory reactions around filler, so we’ll plan around them.
Before your appointment
- For one week before: Skip aspirin, NSAIDs (ibuprofen, naproxen), fish oil, vitamin E, ginkgo biloba, alcohol, dark chocolate and grapefruit, which can increase bruising. Don’t stop any medication prescribed by your doctor without talking to them first.
- For one month before: Don’t schedule dental cleanings or dental work.
- Big event coming up? Book filler at least two to three months ahead. That leaves time for the product to settle, a follow-up and touch-up at three to four weeks, and a full month to heal if you bruise.
- Cold sore or skin infection near the area? We’ll hold off until it clears.
What to Expect at Your Filler Appointment
Filler happens in two visits: a consultation, then treatment. Plan on about 60 minutes for a filler appointment, a little more for your first visit.
Your consultation
You’ll meet with Deb for a full-face consultation. She looks at your whole face, not just one area, and builds a plan around your goals, your facial balance and your budget. She’ll go over risks and reasons we might need to reschedule, then book your treatment with Deb or Ann.
Checking in
Complete your intake form online from the email link you get when you book. Trouble saving it? We can send a paper form, or arrive 15 minutes early to finish it here. Feeling nervous? Say so.
Treatment day
Your injector reviews your history one more time and has you sign your consent. We take before photos (you choose whether they stay private), then cleanse, numb, cleanse again and inject with a fine needle or a blunt-tipped cannula. Injecting usually takes 20-45 minutes.
Afterward
Ice only if you’ve bruised, since we don’t want pressure on fresh product. We go over aftercare and the signs that mean you should call us. You can drive yourself home.
Your follow-up
We see you again in three to four weeks to check the result against your goals and touch up if needed.

Does Filler Hurt?
Any time a needle goes into the skin there’s some sensation, and we won’t pretend otherwise. But filler is usually more comfortable than people expect.
Depending on the area, we numb with a strong topical cream (a lidocaine, benzocaine and tetracaine blend) or a small injection of lidocaine. Most of the fillers we use also contain lidocaine, so the area gets more comfortable as we go. Add relaxing music and a vibration tool that keeps your nerves busy, and most clients describe filler as pressure, a pinch and an odd feeling as the product goes in, rather than pain.
Lips are the most sensitive area. If you’re anxious about needles, tell us ahead of time and we’ll take it slow.
Is There Downtime After Filler?
Filler has more downtime than Botox®, so plan for it. You’ll be swollen right after, and the more areas we treat, the more swelling there is. Lips swell the most. Most swelling settles over two to five days, and the product can feel a little lumpy or firm for a few days to a few weeks while it integrates.
Bruising varies. Some people get none; others get a bruise that takes a couple of weeks to fade. If you bruise or bleed easily, expect more downtime.
- No rubbing or pressing on the area
- No heat (saunas, hot yoga) or hard workouts for 24-48 hours
- Sleep on your back with your head elevated the first night or two
- Makeup can go on the next day
Good to know: Keeping your filler on the down-low? Give yourself about a week before big social plans, and two to three months before a major event.
Filler Results & How Long Filler Lasts
Filler results are visible right away. By the time you head home you’ll see most of your result, with some swelling and possibly bruising on top. Over the next few days the swelling comes down, and by three to four weeks the product has settled into its final shape. That’s when we see you for your follow-up.
That follow-up matters for safety, too. For the first few weeks after filler, you’re married to us: we want to hear about anything that doesn’t seem right, and we want to see you back so we know you’ve healed well.

How many syringes will I need?
It’s hard to say without seeing your face, because it depends on how much volume you’ve lost and what you’d like to change. Someone enhancing their lips might need half a syringe every year or two. A face with significant volume loss that has never been treated might need several syringes over a few months, then a smaller maintenance amount once or twice a year.
A common rule of thumb is about one syringe per decade of life to restore lost volume, but that’s a starting point for the conversation, not a prescription. Most clients maintain with a visit every 6 to 12 months. Deb will map out a realistic plan and budget at your consultation.

Filler Safety: What You Should Know
FDA-approved dermal fillers have been used for decades, but filler is a medical procedure with real risks, and we’d rather you hear them from us.
Common and expected
Swelling, bruising, tenderness and temporary lumps that settle as the product integrates.
Less common
Asymmetry that needs a touch-up, infection, delayed nodules or inflammatory reactions, and cold sore flares in people with a history of oral herpes (which is why we pre-treat).
Rare but serious
Vascular occlusion, when filler enters or presses on a blood vessel and cuts off blood supply to the skin. Untreated, it can cause tissue damage and, in extremely rare cases, vision loss.

Am I going to look overdone?
That’s not how we work. Deb and Ann both have a trained aesthetic eye and believe in going low and slow. The goal is natural-looking results: people notice you look rested and well, not that you’ve had something done. If you want more, we can add at your follow-up.
Is filler safe? What are the risks?

Hyaluronic acid fillers like Juvéderm® can be dissolved with hyaluronidase, which is one reason we start most new clients with them. Radiesse® can’t be dissolved as easily, so we save it for areas where we’re confident in the plan or more structure is needed.

Will my skin sag when filler wears off?
Filler doesn’t stretch out your skin. The product is gradually broken down by your body, and your face returns to where it would have been anyway.
Is filler right for every concern?
No. Some concerns are better treated with Botox, Morpheus8®, microneedling, or skin care, and we’ll tell you when that’s the case.
